How to Use the CI MCP Server to Research Lawyers in my AI System?

Solution Overview:

This article explains how to search for lawyers directly within your firm’s AI LLM using the CI MCP Server. The CI MCP Server enables users to search for, retrieve, and summarize CI lawyer profiles, including: bar admissions, court qualifications, education, work history, association, and CI matter narrative data.

Note: While this example will be in Claude for demonstrative purposes, the functionalities and use cases described are not exclusive to Claude —they apply across any compatible LLM platform.

Tactical Rundown:

    • Open LLM and confirm the Courtroom Insight connector is enabled
    • Ask a natural-language question about a lawyer
    • Review the returned profile data
    • Follow up with a refining question if needed

Important: 

The CI MCP Server can only surface CI proprietary data and your firm's internal data (if enabled), but it does not surface data from external integration partners. If your question requires integration partner data, the LLM will tell you it doesn’t have access to that source in the workspace, offer to pull what is available through CI (which includes CourtListener and CI's own surfaced data), and suggest you search the other platform directly through your firm's own login.

Step 1: Confirm the Connector is Active

Before asking your LLM about a lawyer, make sure the Courtroom Insight connector is turned on for your conversation. In the Claude interface, check the connectors or tools menu and confirm Courtroom Insight appears as active. If it is not listed, it may need to be added or reauthorized by your workspace administrator.

Step 2: Ask Your Questions

Once the connector is confirmed as connected, you can ask your LLM a natural language question directly. Example prompts include:

  • "Pull up the CI profile for [lawyer's name]."
  • "What states is [lawyer's name] admitted to practice in?"
  • "Summarize [lawyer's name]'s work history and current firm."
  • "Has [lawyer's name] been qualified before the [court name]?"
  • "What cases has [lawyer's name] been involved in, and what was the outcome?"
  • “Compare [lawyer A] and [lawyer B] by education and years of experience." Claude will use the CI MCP Server to search the People Directory and return matching results.

Step 3: Review the Profile Data

The LLM will surface the relevant sections of the lawyer’s CI Biography based on your question, which may include:

  • Header Information: full name, title, current firm, and location
  • Contact Details: email, phone, firm website, and LinkedIn
  • Admission: states where the lawyer is admitted to practice, including pro hac vice status
  • Education: law school and undergraduate degrees, institutions, and dates attended
  • License/Certification: any additional licenses or certifications and their dates
  • Court Qualifications: courts the lawyer has been admitted or authorized to appear before, and the year of admission
  • Work History: a chronological list of roles, organizations, and dates of employment
  • Associations: professional associations, titles, and start and end dates
  • CI People Narratives: internal narrative content, including profile summary, full biography, and CI notes
  • Case Data: cases the lawyer has been involved in, including case name, docket number, court, cause, nature of suit, law firm, party represented and their role in the case, judge(s), file date, last known filing, termination date, and jurisdiction type
  • Self-Reported Information: any details the lawyer has submitted directly for public viewing

Note: All information types listed above are subject to availability.


Step 4: Refine with a Follow Up

If you want to narrow your search or ask a related question, you may ask a follow up question in the same conversation. Your LLM will retain context from the prior query. Examples include:

  • "Does this profile include any private firm biography notes?"
  • "Show me only the court qualifications, not the full biography."
  • "Search for other lawyers at the same firm with similar admissions."
